All Saints and All Souls Day

We just finished celebrating Halloween or All Hallow’s Eve.  Halloween was set on the last day of October, as a precursors to All Saints Day, which falls on November 1st.

But, what is All Saints Day?

All Saints Day is a celebration of all the saints celebrated by the Catholic and various protestant churches.

The celebration of saints, originated with those who had been martyred for the faith.  In time, the tradition of saints evolved to others who had led Godly lives or became Christian leaders.

All Saints Day revolves around “giving God solemn thanks for the lives and deaths of his saints”, including those who are “famous or obscure”.

All Souls Day falls on November 2nd, the day after All Saints Day.  All Souls Day commemorates all the souls of the faithfully departed.

This is the day when many remember their deceased family members and loved ones.

Many churches will say a prayer for the dead on this day.

Both days stem from the belief that there is a strong spiritual bond between those in heaven and the living.

Is there a saint or dearly departed loved one who is special to you?
