The name June is derived from the Latin word Junius. Based on the writings of Ovid, it is believed Junius originated either from the Roman goddess Juno, who was the goddess of marriage and wife of Jupiter {the supreme deity}. Another theory of the origin is it comes from the Latin word iuniores, which means “younger ones”, which is opposed to Maius {May} meaning elders.
Lucius Juius Brutus was the founder of the Roman Republic and some scholars believe this is where the name originated.
Ovid writes of consulting the high priestess of Juniper about marriage for his daughter and was advised to wait until after June 15th.
