History of Spy Wednesday

Spy Wednesday is part of Holy Week and also known as Holy Wednesday or Good Wednesday.

Mary anointed Jesus feet

After Palm Sunday, the Sanhedrin gather and begin to plot to kill Jesus before the feast of Pesach or Passover.

On the Wednesday before his death, Jesus is in Bethany, visiting at the house of Simon the Leper.  This is where Mary anoints his head and feet with the oil spikenard.

The disciples were indignant about this act, insisting the money could be given to the poor.  After all, this was an expensive oil.

Judas agreed to betray Jesus

Judas Iscariot wanted to keep the money for himself and approached the Sanhedrin, offering to deliver Jesus to them in exchange for thirty pieces of silver.

Judas begins to seek the opportunity to betray Jesus. For this reason Holy Wednesday is often referred to as Spy Wednesday, because the word spy means to “ambush, ambuscade, snare”.
