Radios changed the entire country during the 1920s. At the beginning of the 1920s few homes had a radio, but before the end of
the decade every home had a radio. President Calvin Coolidge was the first President of the United States to be broadcast across the radio airwaves.
Families would sit around the radio to listen to news broadcast or their favorite radio show.
Amos n’Andy was popular radio show of the 1920s. They were sponsored by Pepsodent toothpaste.
In addition there were electric vacuum cleaners, elevators, air conditioning and ice boxes for the home (refrigerators came later).
Flush toilets were still relatively new as was on tap hot and cold running water.
Oil stoves & ovens replaced wood and coal fired stoves.
Airplanes gained popularity during World War I {The Great War}. After the war many pilots became barnstomers. This means they flew into small towns and showed off their fly capabilities, sometimes taking passengers along with them.
Commercial airlines were in their infancy in the 1920s. Imperial Airlines was formed in 1924. “The airline was a pioneer in surveying and opening up air routes across the world to serve far-flung parts of the British Empire and to enhance trade and integration.”
Charles Lindbergh made history flying solo across the Atlantic in 1927. Airships were becoming a popular form of transportation across the Atlantic. The 1937 Hindenburg disaster is the most well-known airship disaster, but far from the only such disaster.
