National Nurses Day falls on Saturday, May 6th this year.

The purpose of nurse’s day is to “raise awareness of the important role nurses play in society.”

Florence Nightingale is considered the founder of modern nursing.

Nightingale came to prominence during the Crimean War, where she trained and managed the nurses
caring for the wounded.

She made numerous improvements and was a trailblazer in her 90 years.  {She lived from 1820-1910}.

Miss Nightingale became known as the “Lady with the lamp,” for making rounds to wounded soldiers at night during the Victorian Age.  Wikipedia states, “She gave nursing a highly favorable reputation.”

National Nurses Week was first observed in October 1954, which marked the 100th Anniversary of Nightingale’s mission to Crimea. {Crimean War was from 1853-1856}.

The date of May 6th, was first introduced in observance of Miss Nightingale’s birthday in 1982.  President Ronald Regan signed the proclamation for this date of remembrance, after decades of denied petitions for a nurses day.

Don’t forget to thank a nurse during National Nurses Day.
