National Grandparents Day

Today is National Grandparents Day. Enjoy spending the day with your grandparent, or if you are a grandparent with your grandchildren.

If you don’t have a grandparent, contact a local nursing home to inquire.

National Grandparents Day began in 1978.

Marian McQuade of Oak Hill, West Virginia made it her mission to educate the youth about the important
contributions seniors have made throughout history.  She encouraged youth to adopt a grandparent not just for a day, but for a “lifetime.”

The resolution for National Grandparents Day was first introduced to the senate in 1973 by Senator Jennings
Randolph of WV.

President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation on August 3, 1978. The day’s purpose is: “…to honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children, and to help children become aware of the strength, information, and guidance older people can offer”.

In 2004, A Song for Grandma and Grandpa by Johnny Prill became the official song for National Grandparents Day.

The official flower for Grandparents day is the forget-me-nots.

The holiday has since spread to a number of other countries around the world.

We hear many wonderful memories of times our resident’s spent with their grandparents while growing up.

It always touches our hearts to see the smiles that cross grandparents faces when their grandchildren and great-grandchildren are with them.  Many adults light up and come alive when they see the innocent, smiling faces of children.
