What is a Gedcom?

If you’ve ever tried to upload genealogy information onto Ancestry.com or into a genealogy computer program you may have seen the term Gedcom.

But, what is a Gedcom?

Wikipedia describes it as a plain text containing genealogical information about individuals, and meta data linking these records together. Most genealogy software supports importing from and exporting to GEDCOM format.

The term stands for Genealogical Data Communication.

Today, the majority of genealogy programs support the Gedcom format.

A Gedcom is much like saving a Word document as a PDF and then uploading it into another program to open.

So, when you see the term Gedcom, you now have an idea what it means.
