Genealogy Friday: 5 Things to Consider in Creating a New Holiday Custom

The holidays are upon us and the spirit of the season.  However, after the true reason for the season {the birth of Christ,} come the most important part of the season.  Spending time with family.

Each family has their own customs that they celebrate and enjoy.

But, family dynamics change with births, marriages, deaths, moves, children leaving home, etc.  With these changes comes the opportunity to create or tweak family customs.

Some customs began by happenstance and others are planned or agreed on by the family.

So, if you are looking for a new custom or way to unite the family there are some things to consider:

  1. What is special or unique to your family?
  2. Is there a loved one you want to remember?
  3. Is there a game, hobby or place that is special to the family?
  4. What can you do to create the spirit of togetherness?
  5. What do I most want to share with my family?

Creating family customs does not have to be elaborate or even take a long time, it just has to be special to your family.
