Donald Trump was the first president since Dwight Eisenhower to not have a political background. Instead, Trump was a businessman and TV personality.

Donald Trump

Donald John Trump was born on June 14, 1946 in Queens, New York. He was the fourth of five children born to Frederick Christ and Mary Ann MacLeod Trump.

At 13, he enrolled in the New York Military Academy and graduated high school from there.

After finishing high school, he attended Fordham University for two years before transferring to the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, from which he graduated in 1968. He studied real estate and worked for the family’s company, Elizabeth Trump & Sons, which was named for his paternal grandmother.

In 1971, he took over the family real estate firm and renamed it The Trump Organization. The organization eventually became the umbrella organization for several hundred business ventures and partnerships, including numerous golf courses, hotels and casinos.

Trump married Czech model Ivana Zelníčková on April 7, 1977. The couple would have two sons, Donald Jr. and Eric; and a daughter, Ivanka.

In 1981, his brother, Fred Jr. died from alcoholism, which he says led him to abstain from alcohol and cigarettes.

In 1983, Trump purchased the Football team, New Jersey Generals. The team later merged with another before folding. Trump remained involved with other sports including operating golf courses in several countries, hosting boxing matches, sponsoring teams and various other pursuits.

In 1984, he opened Harrah’s at Trump Plaza in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

In 1985, he purchased the historic Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. He later turned it into a private club with membership fees.

Donald Trump has been listed on the Forbes list and Bloomberg report as one of the most wealthiest off and on since the early 1980s. Trump told campaign audiences he began his career with “a small loan of one million dollars” from his father, which he paid back with interest.

In 1996, he purchased the Miss Universe, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageant organizations. He sold the pageant organizations in 2015.

Donald Trump considered running for president and Governor of New York off and on since 1988. However, he did not run at these times. He gave a speech in 2011 to the Conservative Political Action Conference that is said to have kick-started his political career with the Republican Party.

On June 16, 2015,Trump announced his candidacy for President of the United States at Trump Tower in New York City. His campaign slogan became “Make America Great Again”. He emerged the leader out of 16 Republican candidates. He then fought a battle against former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Many political analysts believed Clinton would win the election, but Donald Trump pulled an upset and won the presidential election.

Upon being elected president, Trump resigned from his organization and placed his financial assets in a trust.

Donald J. Trump was sworn in as the 45th president on January 20, 2017. He has not wasted time in making policy changes and pushing his agenda. Shortly after taking office, he filed the papers for his re-election campaign.

Trump became the oldest and wealthiest person to assume the presidency, the first without prior military or government service, and the fifth elected with less than a plurality of the national popular vote.
