Question: I’ve Been told the government drafted single men before they would a married man.
Single men were taken first over married men during the draft, but married men did fight also. Usually {during WWI at least} because they wanted to.
During the Civil War men would sign up and they eventually called for men to sign up. Some men paid someone to take their place. Both married and single men served during the Civil War.
During World War I and World War II, men who were married with children and men who were the only son or sole surviving son were exempt from military service.
The law changed according to this sometime after World War II. If the draft were re-instated today these men would not be exempt.
What type of records have you found regarding single and married men?
