The word picnic first appeared in print in 1692. The term originally described a group of people dining, who brought their own wine.
The concept of a picnic is that everyone brought something to contribute.
The idea of eating a meal out of doors, originates to the Middle Ages, when hunting was a popular sport.
Picnics are often a family oriented affair, but they are also popular with church groups and small communities. Community wide picnics were very popular in the 19th and early 20th Centuries.
