Summer Has Arrived

The beach is a favorite summer vacation spot

The arrival of June, ushers in the official start of summer.
The summer season is considered to officially start during Memorial Day weekend.  However, the first official day of summer is Thursday, June 21st.
This date is also the summer solstice, which is also known as the longest day.  Solstice is derived from the Latin words sol, meaning sun, and sistere, meaning to stand still.
This is because this is the longest period of sunlight in the year.
Summer solstice is also referred to in some cultures as midsummer. 

William Shakespeare

Many are familiar with William Shakespeare’s A
Midsummer Night’s Dream
. The play is one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays and
performed around the world.
The celebration of midsummer dates back to ancient traditions when festivals were held to celebrate the summer solstice. 
The Alzheimer’s Association celebrates the longest day with a variety of activities and sporting events to raise
awareness and raise funds for Alzheimer’s research.
