Anyone living through World War II remembers the sacrifices and hardships that accompanied this difficult time in world history.
VE {Victory in Europe} Day occurred on May 8, 1945, but the battle continued in Japan.
On August 14, 1945, it was announced that the Japanese had surrendered. {August 15th in Japan due to the time difference.} The surrender of the Japanese effectively ended World War II.
The signing of the surrender document occurred aboard the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945.
The surrender of Japan, was a forced move when President Truman made the difficult decision to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima on Aug. 6th and Nagasaki on Aug. 9th.
News of Japan’s offer to surrender began to circulate on Aug. 10th, which brought celebrations from around the world.
Allied soldiers began dancing in the streets in London upon hearing the news and American soldiers began shouting “It’s over in the Pacific.”
Hence, V J Day means Victory in Japan.
