Traditions of Christmas: Angels

posted in: Christmas, Holidays | 0

Angels appeared in the Bible to Mary and Joseph, as well as to the angels.

Angels are known as being protectors that watch over us and because of this, the image of them provides comfort to many people.  Some people even feel that angels keep evil spirits away.

Christians began placing angels at the top of the Christmas tree to symbolize the significance of the heavenly beings in the Christmas story found in the Bible.

The first angel ornaments were handmade ones, such as found in cookies, paper, straw or wood.

By the early 1800s, German glass blowers had invented Christmas ornaments.  So, it only seems natural that from this glass angels began to appear on many Christmas trees.   The practice soon spread throughout the world.

By the early 20th Century, mass production was rampant and angels ornaments, keepsakes and, tree toppers could be found in a variety of sizes and designs.

With the technological advancements of the last few decades, angels now glow, twinkle, move or dance, or play music or sing.

Collecting angels are very popular today, whether it is for Christmas ornaments or year round figurines.  Collectors enjoy the comfort and peace of protection the angels provide.
