My journey into genealogy began at a very difficult time in my life. I was going through a divorce.
I had heard rumors about our relationship with David Crockett and a variety of other family stories all of my young, twenty-one years, but I wanted to learn more.
I had no idea that as I began to research more about my family and my roots, I would also learn more about myself.
I know that I am not alone in this journey. From talking with others, reading books and watching shows such as Who Do you Think You Are? and Finding Your Roots, the same comments are made time and time again. “I never knew. I feel as if I better understand where I came from.”
Genealogy research leads us to open doors to the past that has been closed for so long, we may not even have heard of a particular ancestor. We often discover how closely their story or struggle parallels our own.
So, if you are interested in pursuing your family history, be prepared for a journey of self-discovery in your pursuit.
What discoveries have you made about yourself through researching your family history?
