Traditions of Christmas: Doves

posted in: Christmas, Holidays | 0

Doves have been used since Biblical times as a symbol of peace.  Noah sent a dove out to determine if it was safe to return to earth.

Later, doves were one of the animals used in sacrifice by the Israelites to the Lord.

When Jesus was baptized, Scripture records that “the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven [saying]: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased’.”

Since then the peace of the holy spirit has been represented by that of a dove.

Images of doves are used as a reminder of peace.  Christmas is a time when we hear words such as “peace on earth and goodwill to all men” {but shouldn’t we use those words year round?}

Jesus was born to bring peace between the sin of mankind and God.

Doves are used on Christmas trees, often sitting between the branches.
