The difference with Ancestry.com is that Ancestry, usually has just the regiment and dates of service.  Fold 3 has the actual records that have been scanned from the National Archives.

Fold 3 allows you to search by time period, name, record, etc.

Fold 3 is a subscription service.  At the moment their current subscription fee is $79.95.

However, most public libraries carry a subscription to this service.  You do have to be at a library location to access the website, but you can visit your local library to test drive the site or save on your finances.
